A Report on National Conference on Business Excellence and Leadership

On 14th May 2026, the Institute of Directors (IOD), India hosted its National Conference on Business Excellence and Leadership, held at Hotel The Ashok, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The conference was on the theme: 'Board Leadership for Competitive Advantage', and carried a dual message marking the launch of a unique national platform for advancing organisational Excellence and Leadership effectiveness, as also celebrating the enduring legacy of the Golden Peacock Awards (GPA), one of India's well-patronised benchmarks in corporate achievement. Profiles of the award-winning organisations are featured in this issue from Pg. 35 to Pg. 46. The Awards were presented across five categories: AI Excellence, Innovative Product/Service, Quality, Business Excellence, and Training, recognising organisations that have distinguished themselves not by aspiration alone, but by measurable performance. The Conference brought together around 400 board members, senior executives, policymakers, and corporate leaders from over a hundred organisations under one roof, demonstrating that good governance is not just limited to boardroom discussions, but is actively practised across India's leading organisations.
What emerged turning the course of the day was a compelling, collective assertion: that Business Excellence and Responsible Governance are not competing priorities, but they are the very same pursuit seen from different angles.

Emphasising the importance of perseverance, accountability, and humility, he remarked that public life inevitably brings up both appreciation and criticism, and that one must learn to accept both with grace. LEADERSHIP, STRATEGY & COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN AN ERA OF GOLDEN DISRUPTION
The Session was 'Moderated' by:
Mr. Abhishek Lahiri

Mr. Lahiri reflected on the ongoing global transition from a VUCA environment to an increasingly AI driven world. He observed that economies and businesses alike are navigating a rapidly evolving landscape marked by disruption and continuing crises. Emphasising that every sector must adapt to these realities, he noted that digitalisation has evolved from a sector specific phenomenon into a foundational infrastructure across both advanced and emerging economies. Highlighting India's progress, Mr. Lahiri pointed to the country's expanding mobile penetration, strengthening digital infrastructure, and growing leadership in scale and capacity development. He described Artificial Intelligence as the next transformative phase of this journey and stressed the importance of understanding how organisations can responsibly adapt to this shift. Speaking on business excellence, he remarked that true excellence lies not only in innovation and adaptability, but also in ethical conduct, humility, rationality, and a continued commitment towards all employees and values espoused by the organisation.

The session had the following distinguished speakers:
1. Mr. Sharad Agarwal
Chief Executive Officer
AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL)
2. Mr. Suranjit Mishra
Chief Financial Officer & Chief - Corporate Governance

Mr. Agarwal reflected on the evolving nature of leadership in an era increasingly defined by uncertainty, technological disruption, and rapid transformation. Drawing a parallel with the Aviation and MRO industries, he observed that recent global crises, including the pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions, underscored the importance of resilience and adaptability within organisations. He noted that while the aviation sector had come to a temporary standstill during COVID- 19, resilient airlines and MRO organisations utilised the period to strengthen operations and be prepared for recovery. In contrast, the closure of several small business and suppliers in the chain during the crisis has continued to impact global supply chains today. Speaking on digital transformation, Mr. Agarwal emphasised that Artificial Intelligence should be viewed as an enabling tool rather than a replacement for human judgement. He highlighted the need for ethical leadership, faster decision-making, sustainability, and a responsible adoption of technology. Concluding his remarks, he stressed that efficiency, resilience, governance, and trust will remain central to organisational success in the future.
Mr. Mishra reflected on the evolution of India's power sector since economic liberalisation and the significant regulatory and structural transitions witnessed over the past few decades. Referring to reforms such as the Electricity Act of 2003, he stated how the sector had navigated challenges ranging from stranded assets and bankruptcies to the transition from thermal to renewable energy generation, alongside the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking from a financial perspective, Mr. Mishra emphasised on the importance of Strategic Capital Allocation in a sector requiring long-term investments and planning. He highlighted that Tata Power's large-scale infrastructure commitments demand careful forecasting to ensure sustainable growth and shareholder value over the next several decades. He further observed that digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence are expected to play a transformative role in ensuring timely and cost-efficient project implementation. Concluding his remarks, he stressed that technology should be leveraged to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen long term organisational resilience.
This was followed by an interactive Q&A session.
