It is the only Central Public Sector Undertaking fully focused on renewable energy and was conferred Navratna status in August 2024.
From a Solar Mission to a Navratna
Established in 2011 as a not-for-profit company to implement the National Solar Mission, SECI was converted into a commercial company in 2015, with its mandate expanded to all renewable energy segments. In 2026, SECI emerged as the Sole Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA) for pan-India renewable energy development.
What SECI Does
SECI operates through three key business models: Renewable Energy Implementing Agency, selecting developers through transparent competitive bidding; development of its own renewable energy projects, with a target of 10 GW by 2030; and Project Management Consultancy, providing end-to-end support from concept to commissioning services.
SECI acts as a Renewable Power Procurer, Tendering Authority, Policy Implementation Arm and Market Maker. Its work spans renewable power procurement, competitive tariff discovery and the development of emerging solutions such as hybrid renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen.
Creating a Robust Renewable Energy Ecosystem
Through its REIA model, SECI conducts competitive bidding, enables developers to enter into long-term Power Purchase Agreements, and signs Power Sale Agreements with DISCOMs and other buyers. This provides developers with assured long-term offtake while enabling buyers to access reliable, competitively priced renewable power. SECI’s interventions have helped drive market growth, attract large-scale investment, build a robust renewable energy ecosystem and strengthen national energy security.
SECI’s Impact
As of 30 June 2026, SECI had PSA agreements with DISCOMs covering 67+ GW. The commissioned renewable energy capacity stood at 41+ GW, while its share in overall renewable energy generation was approximately 20% in FY 2025–26. SECI has facilitated market investments of approximately Rs.3.6 lakh crore.
A Strong Track Record
SECI is the Sole Renewable Energy Implementing Agency under MNRE for pan-India RE development and holds the highest category power trading licence granted by CERC. It has maintained a 100% on-time payment record to developers, reinforcing investor confidence, and its Navratna status reflects its growing strategic importance.
Way Forward
SECI’s roadmap includes innovative tenders addressing peak management and intermittency, initiatives for green hydrogen and its derivatives, green hydrogen hubs, strategic own projects, joint ventures and subsidiaries, and initiatives to address the power requirements of the C&I sector.
