Innovative Initiatives in Sustainable Public Transportation
A special story about the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) by
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kochi and the wider Kochi Metropolitan Region of Kerala. It has been a pioneer in introducing forward-thinking initiatives aimed at enhancing public transportation and sustainability. Established itself as a trailblazer in promoting sustainable mobility in urban India through a combination of eco-friendly technologies, innovative infrastructure, and a commitment to social inclusion, KMRL has created a model for future public transport systems that prioritise environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and community welfare.
Kochi Water Metro: Sustainable Water Based Transit
Kochi Water Metro is an extension of the metro network into the city's waterways. The project is the first of its kind in India and the largest network of battery-powered electric boats globally. The water metro is designed to offer eco-friendly transportation to island communities and reduce road congestion. The boats use lithium titanate oxide (LTO) batteries, which allow for quick charging while passengers board and disembark. Operating in both battery and hybrid modes, these boats provide reliable service while minimising environmental impact, just like metro rails. This sustainable water transportation system was recognised with the prestigious Gussis Electric Boat Award as the best electric boat in the world.
Renewable energy integration
A hallmark of KMRL's sustainability model is its extensive use of renewable energy, particularly solar power. Solar panels installed on metro stations, depots, and other facilities generate approximately 50% of the metro's energy needs, with future plans to expand this capacity. By reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy sources, KMRL significantly cuts its greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. KMRL's solar initiative is more than just energy savings it is an investment in environmental stewardship, setting an example for other urban transit systems globally.
Promotion of Non-Motorized Transport (NMT)
Kochi metro has developed a comprehensive NMT plan to encourage last-mile connectivity through walking, cycling, and electric rickshaws. The integration of bicycle sharing system and dedicated pedestrian walkways ensures that commuters can reach metro stations conveniently and safely. 1000 cycles were deployed across 35 hubs spread across the city comprising of 25 Metro Stations and remaining secondary 6 stations situated at prominent public places. Footpaths built to international standards around the metro system ensure accessibility and encourage sustainable commuting practices.
KMRL's support for non-motorized transport reflects its focus on reducing carbon emissions and promoting health conscious alternatives for daily commuters.
Inclusivity, accessibility & social sustainability
KMRL prioritises accessibility for all sections of society, including the elderly and differently-abled individuals. Metro stations and the Water Metro boats are equipped with facilities such as ramps, elevators, and tactile flooring to assist visually impaired individuals.
KMRL regularly provides free or subsidised rides to special children and elderly passengers as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives. These inclusivity measures demonstrate Kochi Metro's commitment to creating an equitable public transport system. Additionally, public awareness campaigns have been conducted to educate passengers about the importance of inclusivity in public transport.
KMRL has created a model for future public transport systems that prioritise environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and community welfare.
KMRL's sustainability model extends to social inclusivity as well. By hiring women and members of the transgender community in significant numbers, KMRL promotes gender equality and provides employment opportunities to marginalised groups.
Smart ticketing and passenger services
Kochi Metro has adopted a state-of-the art ticketing system that integrates the traditional tokens with smart cards and digital payment systems. The Kochi1 card, a contactless smart card, offers convenience to regular commuters, while QR code-based mobile ticketing enhances the experience for occasional travellers.
Another smart ticketing option provided by Kochi Metro involves a Google wallet that offers a convenient way to access tickets and navigate the transit network. Metro tickets can also be availed of using the Kochi1 app, Redbus, or WhatsApp. The system is also integrated with other modes of public transport, allowing for seamless, multi-modal travel.
