Governance Builds Trust, Trust Attracts Investment: Lessons on Integrity, Accountability and Transparency
The Institute of Directors has, over the past three decades, made an invaluable contribution towards strengthening corporate governance in India. Through its thought leadership, director development programmes, governance publications and national forums, it has been constantly encouraging responsible leadership and board excellence. I am particularly delighted that Chennai has been chosen to host the inaugural edition of the National Convention on 'Boards' Series. The nationwide initiative reflects the growing importance of boardrooms in shaping India's economic future.
The theme of today's convention is the strategy of driving transformation and global competitiveness. It is both timely and significant. We are living in an era where change is no longer occasional; it is continuous.
Artificial intelligence is redefining industries. Digital technologies are transforming business models. Climate considerations are influencing investment decisions. Supply chains are becoming more resilient and diversified. Consumers are more informed than ever before. Global markets are increasingly interconnected, yet geopolitical developments continue to introduce new uncertainties.
In such an environment, organisations cannot rely solely on operational excellence. They require strategic leadership that can anticipate change, manage complexity and inspire confidence. The responsibility is substantial in corporate boards.
Innovation without ethics creates uncertainty. Technology without accountability creates distrust. Digital transformation without inclusion leaves people behind.
Today, boardrooms are far more than strategic institutions. They have a very long-term future for organisational leadership. It is a very difficult question to ask before difficult situations arise. It is where strategy meets responsibility.
The role of directors has therefore evolved considerably. Boards are expected not merely to review financial performance, but to guide innovation, oversee technology adoption, manage enterprise risks, strengthen and promote diversity, ensure ethical conduct, and integrate sustainability into the business strategy.
Investments create innovation. Innovation drives competitiveness, and competitiveness ultimately creates prosperity.
The most successful organisations of the future need not necessarily be those that have the biggest balance sheets. They will be the strongest in governance because governance builds trust and trust attracts investments.
Investments create innovation. Innovation drives competitiveness, and competitiveness ultimately creates prosperity.
Friends, India today stands at an extraordinary moment in its development journey. Our economy continues to demonstrate resilience and dynamism. We have emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. Digital public infrastructure has transformed service delivery.
Manufacturing is expanding rapidly. Innovation ecosystems are flourishing. Our young entrepreneurs are building globally competitive enterprises.
Corporate boards will play a defining role in this journey. Tamil Nadu, in particular, has consistently demonstrated what good governance and industry can achieve. Our state has earned global recognition as one of India's foremost manufacturing and industrial destinations.
From automobiles and auto components to electronics, renewable energy, textiles, healthcare, aerospace, information technology, advanced manufacturing and food, Tamil Nadu continues to lead from the front. We are home here to one of the country's strongest industrial ecosystems. Our universities and technical institutions produce highly skilled talents. Our entrepreneurs continue to innovate.
Ladies and gentlemen, as the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, I have the privilege to serve in the department that directly touches the lives of millions of citizens every day. Food security is not merely an administrative responsibility. It represents dignity. It represents social justice and inclusive governance.
Tamil Nadu has consistently recognised a strong public distribution system and its commitment towards ensuring essential commodities reach every eligible household with transparency and efficiency. To achieve a successful public programme lies one common goal, one common principle, which is Good Governance. The same principle applies equally to governance in corporates.
Whether one manages public institutions or private enterprises, integrity, accountability and transparency remain the foundation of long-term success. The boards, therefore, have an important responsibility not merely to the shareholders, but to our society at large.
Technology today offers unprecedented opportunities. Artificial intelligence, data analysis, automation, blockchain, cybersecurity and digital governance, these technologies are transforming every sector. However, technology must always remain guided by human lives and human values. Innovation without ethics creates uncertainty. Technology without accountability creates distrust. Digital transformation without inclusion leaves people behind. Therefore, while embracing innovation, boards must preserve trust. Balance will define successful leadership in the era.
The achievements remind us that leadership is built not merely through professional success, but through vision, perseverance, integrity and public purpose.
