In the Fond Memory of Rt. Hon. Lord Swraj Paul
IN THE FOND MEMORY OF
RT. HON. LORD SWRAJ PAUL
18 February 1931 – 21 August 2025
The Institute of Directors (IOD), India Council records its deep condolences & sense of grief at the passing away of the Rt. Hon. Lord Swraj Paul, Founder Chairman, Caparo, UK in London.
Lord Paul was not only a leading figure & industrialist in the UK but also a pioneer in promoting industry in the core sector both in UK & in India. He did India, the land of his birth, proud when he was elevated to the British House of Lords, one of the first few Indians to be honoured with the title after he migrated to UK. While serving in the House of Lords, he never gave up on his sense of pride on being a hardworking Indian who had travelled across the oceans as an entrepreneur, an innovative & highly qualified engineer from MIT, USA and a management thinker. He was the first person of Indian origin to hold the post of Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. He is credited with the memorable comment as a most distinguished member of Indian diaspora abroad. When asked to describe his new identity in a foreign land, he said: “I am one hundred percent British & one hundred percent Indian”.
Besides being a highly successful industrialist, he was also an author of repute & a writer. His autobiography- 'Beyond Boundaries' is a primer for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to attain success in an alien land but at the same time not giving up on their roots and their rich cultural heritage. He will be remembered not only for his business acumen but his spirit of philanthropy. He donated vast sums of his accumulated wealth not only to the cause of preserving Nature in all its forms such as the London Zoo but promoting the cause of universal education in his adopted country. He served as a distinguished Chancellor of various universities in UK.
We at IOD will remain particularly grateful to him as he was one of the moving spirits of promoting the IOD as a 'not for profit society' Think Tank, from its humble beginnings in Calcutta where the IOD was born in the early 1990s. Lord Paul nourished the IOD with his constant guidance & encouragement to expand beyond India, especially in UK. From the IOD's Annual Events in London to its successful journey now to the House of Lords, would not have been possible but for his support & guidance. He was one of the main speakers at IOD's Professional Meets in UK & later at the Annual Global Business Meets in London.
All the Senior Management of IOD, its regional Directors & Members all over India join Lord Paul's family both in India & UK in praying that his Soul may rest in eternal peace.
