The Business of Business Is (Not) Just Business: How Behavioural Tools Can Drive Real Change

By- Institute of Directors | Authored by- Ms. Sutapa Banerjee

The book arrives with a question that refuses to get tidied away easily: Can the forces that shaped India's most urgent crises also be the forces that resolve them?

The Business of Business Is (Not) Just Business does not pretend to have a definitive answer. What it does, with considerable intellectual rigour, is bring together the right people to think the question through.

The book is a curated collection of essays written by a diverse group of contributors, including economists, domain experts, business leaders from both traditional and digital enterprises, investors, and catalytic agents. Among the contributors are distinguished voices such as Mr. Kartikeya Sarabhai, Mr. Manish Sabharwal, Mr. Parth Jindal, Mr. Pirojsha Godrej, and Mr. Deepinder Goyal, among others. Together, they examine three pressing challenges confronting India today: the environmental sustainability of economic growth; unemployment, with particular attention to the low economic participation of women; and the deeply entrenched social norms and stereotypes that continue to hinder progress. Each contributor offers a distinct perspective and, importantly, they do not all arrive at the same conclusions.

That lack of uniformity is one of the book's greatest strengths.

Ms. Banerjee's editorial hand is most visible not in what she asserts, but in what she deliberately declines to assert. As she notes, the objective is to "shift the discourse from what businesses should do, to what businesses should propel more of them to take meaningful actions."

Rather than offering a blueprint, the book provides a framework for inquiry. Rather than prescribing answers, it invites reflection. For business leaders, policymakers, investors, and governance professionals seeking to understand how behavioural tools can influence outcomes at scale, The Business of Business Is (Not) Just Business makes a thoughtful and timely contribution.
