Leadership in Motion: Women Shaping the Future of Mobility in India

By- Institute of Directors | Authored by- Ranjeeka Sachdev

Women leaders contribute a holistic perspective that prioritizes sustainability, social impact, and customer-centric innovation, which are considered as the key drivers of India's mobility agenda.

India's automotive sector is undergoing rapid transformation driven by electrification, connectivity, and sustainability. As the industry evolves, women leaders are playing an increasingly influential role bringing innovation, resilience, and a collaborative approach to leadership.

With India emerging as one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets, national initiatives such as the PM E-DRIVE scheme, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program for ACC battery manufacturing, PM-eBus Sewa, and FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicle) are accelerating EV adoption, strengthening domestic manufacturing, and expanding charging infrastructure. This shift demands leadership that is agile, future-ready, and inclusive.

Historically male dominated, the automotive industry is seeing a steady rise in women pursuing STEM careers and moving into leadership roles across companies, startups, and public institutions. Women leaders contribute a holistic perspective that prioritizes sustainability, social impact, and customer-centric innovation, which are considered as the key drivers of India's mobility agenda. Their collaborative leadership style also strengthens innovation as the sector integrates AI, IoT, and digital technologies to enhance safety and customer experience.

Promoting gender diversity is both a business advantage and a social responsibility. As women increasingly influence mobility decisions and vehicle purchases, organizations benefit from leadership teams that reflect the diversity of their customers. Companies in India are responding by embedding gender diversity in their strategies by setting representation goals, offering bias-awareness training, and creating culturally relevant development programs.

As an HR leader in the automotive space, I have seen how women are redefining leadership. Building a strong pipeline requires consistent focus on recruitment, retention, and development through mentorship, sponsorship, and STEM-focused career paths. The sector faces ongoing challenges, including gender stereotypes, work–life balance pressures, limited mentorship networks, and unequal access to high visibility opportunities.

At our organization, we strengthen leadership readiness through three critical levers:

• Inter-Department Career Path Mobility: Cross functional rotations give women exposure to broaden strategic thinking, strengthens decision-making, and accelerates leadership readiness.

• Diversity in Recruitment: Redesigned hiring processes, diverse sourcing channels, balanced slates, and gender-neutral job descriptions create equitable access.

• Succession Planning with Women Successors: Identifying high-potential women early and preparing at least one-woman successor for each key role ensures continuity and signals strong commitment to gender equity.

To drive inclusion and address challenges we also invest in:

• Flexible work models and women's health and safety policies to further support India-specific needs.

• Women Exchange Network providing a space for peer learning, shared experiences, and professional growth.

• Structured mentorship programs that offer personalized guidance and career advancement pathways.

• Unconscious bias training to foster awareness, reflection, and inclusive behaviors across the workforce.

Research consistently shows that gender-diverse leadership teams outperform peers, drive stronger innovation, and foster higher engagement. In a fast-evolving automotive landscape, developing women leaders is not just beneficial-it is essential for long-term competitiveness.

Women are not only contributing to India's mobility transformation but actively leading it. Empowering them through intentional development and inclusive culture will be critical to shaping a sustainable, agile, and future-ready automotive industry.

As women increasingly influence mobility decisions and vehicle purchases, organizations benefit from leadership teams that reflect the diversity of their customers.
